Tofino: 23.9 km
Cumulative distance: 1749 km
Maximum speed: 79 kph
Moving average: 36 kph
Overall average: 28 kph
Moving time: 39 minutes
Total time: 51 minutes
Temperature range: I don't know but I know it was about 12 degrees when we got up this morning. It is cloudy, occasionally rainy and lots of fog. Right over Chesterman Beach. Everywhere else, it is sunny apparently.

It is amazing, driving through old growth forests. These are not the really old trees, they were back a 50 km but these trees smell pretty strongly of old forest. It alternates between the smell of cedar, cotton candy, wet dirt.

Chesterman Beach is one beach over from world famous Long Beach and also is home to the Wickaninnish Inn, which is very famous for people visiting during storm season as the hotel boasts stunning views looking west out to the ocean.

Just outside our door is Frank Island, which is accessible on foot when the tide is out.

Even in fog and rain, Tofino has it's own special charm. There are lots of people walking on the beach and when Nan and I rode into town today to get provisions, there were lots of people walking around, wearing shorts, sun glasses and hats, despite the locals all wearing sweaters and long pants. People desperate to get the most out of their holiday!

It is also home to Nan's family's Midnight Boce Ball tournament. I didn't win but my team placed "honourable mention" out of four. First place, Second place, Third place and Honourable Mention. Nan may have been the real winner since she had the good sense to go to bed.

Nan's sister and husband rent this big house with six bedrooms for a week every summer. Their two adult sons, their spouses, (one little baby) and a large contingent of their friends show up for a day or a week. Even parents of the friends come at times.

The kids are all out at the beach this afternoon because they are big fans of surfing. At 11 degrees, the water is fresh so they all wear wetsuits, even on the hottest of days. I know the water temperature because on our last visit, I went scuba diving so experienced the water first hand.

One of the kids here is Andy, who is first mate on one of the BC Ferries Corp ferries between Comox and Powell River. He was formerly first mate on the fourth largest yacht in the world, which has resulted in many interesting stories. Andy explains that there is a cold front just off the coast and it is kissing the hot high that the rest of BC and Alberta are experiencing, so the result is rain and fog right over Chesterman Beach.

All the kids just rolled in and they say it is sunny at Long Beach, so it figures.
